Individuals Coming Off Anti-Obesity Jabs Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that people who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds far faster than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.

Research printed in a prominent health publication shows that while overweight individuals can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People purchasing these drugs need to be cognizant of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain implies a reversion to original weight in about one and a half years.

Weighing Approaches

The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Researchers point out that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a slower creep back—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Understanding the Fast Rebound

Doctors propose the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the heightened weight return.

These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Stopping of this medication leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Issue?

Health authorities suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "underscore the long-term character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Experiences

Users who have come off the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"It felt as if a trigger activating and I was suddenly ravenous," said an individual.

This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not established lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Significant Use

Recent estimates show that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire remaining high.

  • Use is higher among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, researchers stress that while the jabs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing lifestyle support.
